Green Sustainable Christmas Tips - Save A Tree, Buy A Fake One

I've been thinking a lot about people can have a greener Christmas experience.
A few ideas came up for me:
1. Buy a fake tree and use it for several years.
2. Use LED lights for your house and tree.
3. Buy Christmas gifts online. The UPS and USPS trucks are gonna be driving those same routes anyway. It saves you gas money and you get to avoid the chaos of the shopping mall. Many places also have free shipping so you can be green while saving some green.
4. Make homemade Christmas cards on recycled paper. They are more personalized if you make them yourself.
5. When gift shopping make sure you have a list so that way you don't have to run to the same store over and over.
6. Purchase recyclable wrapping paper or reusable bags for gift wrapping.
7. Make homemade ornaments.

There are many awesome green Christmas tips at this website: Sustainable Baby Steps

Turn your everyday online shopping into everyday giving. Prices and services are the same as you would normally pay. There are so many organizations you can help through this website but here are a few of my personal favorites: Habitat For Humanity, Rainn, Share Our Strength, and Children's Advocacy Institute.

Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Book Is Eco-Friendly

Yes, that's right. The Death Hallows book was printed on environmentally friendly and sustainable paper products. That makes Harry Potter even more awesome.
photo from Canopy Planet
The book was printed in agreement with the Rainforest Alliance to contain a minimum of 30% post consumer paper. Scholastic claimed that, "This historic commitment is the largest purchase of FSC-certified paper to be used in the printing of a single book title". You can also purchase a special deluxe version that is printed on 100% recycled paper.

The Rainforest Alliance is an international organization that works with businesses to improve the environment. Their stated mission is "to conserve biodiversity and ensure sustainable livelihoods by transforming land-use practices, business practices and consumer behavior. Companies, cooperatives and landowners that participate in our programs meet rigorous standards that conserve biodiversity and provide sustainable livelihoods." Some people are calling Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows the "greenest book in publishing history". Other books in the series have been printed on ancient-forest-friendly paper as well. The result is that printing this way has saved almost 200,000 trees! I'm loving that!

The Rainforest Alliance certifies forestlands to Forest Stewardship Council standards. They worked directly with Scholastic to procure the nearly 22 million pounds of paper for the printing of Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows.

Pepsi's Dream Machines Are Helping Veterans Learn To Become Entrepreneurs

Pepsi has places hundreds of recycling kiosks all over the US. They are for recycling bottles and aluminum cans. Pepsi is calling these kiosks the Dream Machines. Dream Machine kiosks are computerized receptacles that include a personal reward system that allows consumers to collect and redeem points for each bottle or can they recycle in the kiosk. Pepsi is challenging Americans to recycle more and give back.
The Dream Machines are located in high traffic locations such as Rita Aids so that more people will see them and be more likely to use them.

The money made from recycling the bottles and cans is for Pepsi to provide Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities (EBV), a national program offering free, experiential training in entrepreneurship and small business management to post-9/11 veterans with disabilities. This is freaking awesome. I'm all about recycling but now I'm gonna find a Dream Machine close to me (if there is one) so that I can start recycling there. Our country needs more entrepreneurs. Happy Recycling!

Ted 2010: Greg Stone Helping Create Marine Preserves To Protect Our Oceans And Fish

Greg Stone is among many whose lives are dedicated to protecting and conserving our ocean's marine life. Greg Stone is the Chief Scientist for Oceans at Conservation International. He writes and speaks about the state of the marine life environment, with a key focus on how government policy can make positive changes for the marine world. He has went on dives all over the world, exploring and learning how marine life really is so that he can help leaders of our governments around the world understand what needs to be done to protect the water and marine life. He recently did a Ted Talk which is below.

Greg Stone went on The Mission Blue Voyage recently. It was "One piece of Mission Blue is a sea voyage to the Galapagos Islands, April 6-10, 2010, gathering some of the world's most renowned ocean experts -- marine scientists, deep sea explorers, technology innovators, policy makers, business leaders, environmentalists, activists and artists -- for an epic adventure into the blue. Just as important, through the Mission Blue Voyage, we will seed a million-dollar fund to create more marine protected areas." (Ted) After this voyage many of the most brilliant minds on ocean and marine life decided that much more action needed to be taken. These small and large actions are extremely important to not only the life of the marine animals but to the life of the people living on islands around the world. Ocean levels are raising every year because of human activities and pollution. Their are many solutions but a major one is less fishing be allowed from all over the world. Many fish eaten by man are becoming extinct and endangered, such as Chilean Seabass, Bluefin Tuna, Red Snapper, Atlantic Halibit and Cod (very very close to extinction because of overfishing), Orange Roughy, and Spiny Lobster. If people want to continue eating fish governments from around the world need to work together for preservation of ALL the fish that we eat, and people like Greg Stone are working hard to make this possible.

Rich Roll - Fueled On Plants And Kicking Ass

Rich Roll is an entertainment lawyer/producer. He turned 40 in 2008 and instead of buying himself a gift, he decided to take some time and invest in his health. He was out of shape and knew that something had to change.

At 42 he competed in the Ultraman World Championships, an invitation only race. Ultraman World Championships consists of 6.2 miles of swimming, 260 miles of cycling and culminates with a 52.4-mile double marathon run. Wowzas! That's almost twice as many miles as the Ironman Competition, and think that one is brutal.

Men's Fitness magazine recently named Rich Roll one of the "25 Fittest Guys in the World."
On top of all of this Rich Roll is accomplishing greatness with a vegan plant-based diet. Yes, a VEGAN diet, meaning no dairy, no eggs, no meat whatsoever. And I will say "Dang, he looks good!".
Restrain yourself ladies, he's a happily married family man. In fact, he has a gorgeous family.

How do you get from being a coachpotato to an Ultraman. According, to Rich Roll you have to set some serious goals and stick to them. Here's a link to how he set goals and got in the best shape of his life: Coachpotato to Ultraman

He's a true family man and is inspiring many to join him in plant-based eating journey.
You can read more about him and read his blog posts at RichRoll.com

The Story Of Electronics -- Let's Challenge Electronic Companies To Do Better

I am sure the most people get sick of having to buy new electronic devices every 18 months or so. Nowadays electronic products are "designed for the dump" and not "designed to last". I remember my mom's old clothes dryer. That thing was great for 20 years!! So why do these electronic companies make their products so poorly. Watch this video and learn why.

Check out this video and TAKE ACTION by telling Dell they can do better:

Harry Potter's Emma Watson Is Helping Developing Communities Escape Poverty and Promote Sustainability

There's no denying that Emma Watson is a fashion icon. From her cover of Vogue, to here chic gowns at every award show she attends. The world is admiring her beauty and can't stop talking about Emma's trend setting attire.
Emma is all about trends. A big trend right now is conscience fashion wearing. She is using her "best dressed list" status to help people in under-served communities around the world with the goal is to promote sustainability and help these communities escape poverty. To do this she is using her fashion flair to design clothing for and supporting an ethical clothing line called People Tree.

 People Tree's mission

  • To support producer partners' efforts towards economic independence and control over their environment and to challenge the power structures that undermine their rights to a livelihood.
  • To protect the environment and use natural resources sustainably throughout our trading and to promote environmentally responsible lifestyles and environmental initiatives to create new models to promote sustainability.
  • To supply customers with good quality products, with friendly and efficient service and build awareness to empower consumers and producers to participate in Fair Trade and environmentally sustainable solutions.
  • To provide a supportive environment to all stakeholders and promote dialogue and understanding between them.
  • To set an example to business and the government of a Fair Trade model of business based on partnership, people-centred values and sustainability.  (read more about their mission here)

People Tree are Fair Trade Fashion pioneers. Safia Minney, the founder of People Tree, is dedicated to providing the highest quality organic clothing while staying in integrity with the Fair Trade standards. Using ethical entrepreneurship and cutting edge design, People Tree has become the forefront of the Fair Trade movement in Japan and now worldwide. People Tree is using fashion to empower people in developing countries. People Tree employs about 3000 people. Many of these people use HAND WEAVING to create garments. This means People Tree is employing people with real skills, not machines to do all the work. All fabric is dyed by hand with environmentally friendly dyes. Then is hand-woven into fabric then made into clothing.

What Fair Trade actually means:

"Fair Trade doesn't just mean paying a fair price. It is an entirely different way of doing business, where the objective is not profit at any cost, but to help people in the world's most marginalised communities escape poverty and promote sustainability.

(At least, that's the way we see it at People Tree, and that's why we're a registered and very active member of WFTO, the World Fair Trade Organisation.)"
People Tree's Fair Trade Beliefs

Emma Watson is paving the way for fair trade fashion. I hope you join her!

Big Toys - Green Environmentally Friendly Playground Solutions

As a mother of a toddler going to the park is something I enjoy very much so I figured I'd search and find out if there was an eco-friendly type of playground. That search lead me to Big Toys. Big Toys has been building playground toys for over 40 years. Their play structures can be found all over the world. They are in school playgrounds, parks, childcare centers and private communities. Their unique playground structures can be made from 100% recycled steel and plastic or from wood (you get to choose your materials when buying). Their wood comes from Forest Stewardship Council-certified producers, who are for promoting responsible management of the world's forest. Their wood products contain no heavy metals and is arsenide-free. All wood is treated so it won't leach out, dissolve, stain or pollute. All equipment has NO PVC making it safer than  typical playground structures.

Big Toys structures look beautiful and are safe for children. I love that Big Toys is taking environmental responsibility.

Here's a few videos of their innovative playground toy creations:
